In an entirely expected move, TNT has renewed crime drama “The Closer” for a third season, the network confirmed Thursday. TNT has ordered 15 episodes, set to premiere next year.

“This show has been everything we hoped for and more,” said Michael Wright, senior VP of original programming for TNT and TBS. “We are extremely proud to renew it and look forward to another fantastic year working with everyone involved.”

The current season of “The Closer” is the top-rated original series on basic cable, averaging 2.3 million adults 18 to 49 per episode. The show is up 4 percent this year compared to its debut season. Partly thanks to “The Closer’s” performance, TNT just bested rival USA Network to become the top-ranked basic cable network for the second quarter.
