TelevisionWeek is trawling video-sharing Web sites to find the hottest clips spreading on the Internet.
The setup: Memo to Mentos: Don’t buy any more ads this year. Why spend money when anyone with a video camera, a pack of your product and some cola will do your marketing for you? Viral video sites have become infected with clips depicting the explosive results of mixing the two. One creation rose to the top: a three-minute experiment showcasing the geysers of fizz created by mixing 200 liters of Diet Coke with more than 500 Mentos.
The source: The clip was created by Fritz Grobe, a professional juggler, and lawyer Stephen Voltz, who belong to a local theater troupe in Maine. They spent eight months developing the video.
The hits: Video-sharing site Revver posted the video May 31, and it skyrocketed in popularity last week. As of June 15, “Diet Coke and Mentos Experiment” had been viewed more than 2 million times on Revver. The video also made the rounds to other sites. Google Video posted the clip June 12; by June 15 it had hit No. 26 on Google’s top 100 videos. Break.com also posted the clip and received more than 529,000 views.
