PBS Scraps Plans for Kids Go! Digital Channel

Public broadcaster PBS has decided it will not debut a digital linear channel based on its PBS Kids Go! afternoon program block. The launch of the new service had been scheduled for October.

A PBS press release issued Thursday said the broadcaster “is instead considering several other options to extend the brand to best reach early elementary school-age kids, including a video-on-demand service or via other new media platforms. A 24-hour linear digital broadcast channel remains a future option.”

While local PBS stations were supportive of the concept, “an insufficient number of stations are in a position to financially sustain the service,” the release also noted.

The change in plans does not affect the current PBS Kids Go! program block or its Web site. Details on the extension of the PBS Kids Go! brand through additional platforms will be announced in the next few months, the release said.
