PBS Sweeps News Emmy Nominations

Programs seen on public broadcasting stations earned 33 nominations for the 27th Annual News and Documentary Emmys Awards that were announced Tuesday by the New York-based National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

On the network news front, NBC News earned 19 nominations, CBS News picked up 16 nods and ABC News nabbed 14.

Also picking up multiple nominations were: History Channel (12), National Geographic (8), Cinemax (7), HBO and CNN (6 each), Discovery Channel (5), MTV (3) and Discovery HD Theater and Animal Planet (2 each).

Discovery Times Channel, Hallmark Channel, Showtime and Univision earned 1 nomination each.

On July 3, NATAS announced nominations for the first Emmy Award to be presented for original news and documentary content created for non-traditional platforms, such as computers and mobile phones. They included 1 for MTV News on Overdrive.com and for Nationalgeographic.com, 3 for Nytimes.com, and 2 for Washingtonpost.com.

The awards will be presented at a black-tie gala Monday, Sept. 25, at New York City’s Marriott Marquis hotel.
