Viral Video: Power Pipes

TelevisionWeek is trawling video-sharing Web sites to find the hottest clips spreading on the Internet.

The setup: Good move, NBC. With the ink barely dry on the pact the broadcast network crafted with YouTube in late June, NBC has figured out that it’s much more fun to let the genie out yourself. After all, it’s not often that an 11-year-old auditions for your latest talent show and garners a standing ovation — from the judges. But Bianca Ryan did just that on the June 28 episode of “America’s Got Talent” with her show-stopping, jaw-dropping rendition of “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going,” made famous by Jennifer Holliday in the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls,” that’s quite possibly better than the song’s originator. (For comparison’s sake, here’s a clip of Ms. Holliday performing the song at the 1982 Tony Awards.)

Judge Piers Morgan told Ms. Ryan, “I have never heard a voice like that on an 11-year-old in my life. You came on this stage, and you blew us away.” But don’t just take his word for it. If you didn’t catch it on NBC, catch it virally.

The source: NBC posted the video June 29 on YouTube. Several YouTube users also posted clips. The video is also available on NBC.com/AGT and on video-sharing site Veoh.com.

The hits: By July 6 the clip had generated more than 493,000 views on YouTube, including more than 400,000 views for the video posted by NBC. The video also was seen more than 40,000 times on NBC.com and another 8,000 times on Veoh.
