Katie Couric has landed the first presidential interview of her career as anchor of the re-tooled “CBS Evening News,” which debuts Sept. 5.

CBS News announced Monday that Ms. Couric is set to talk with President Bush at the White House for her first CBS News prime-time special, “Five Years Later—How Safe Are We?,” airing at 10 p.m. (ET) Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the end of a day of 9/11 fifth-anniversary programming.

Ms. Couric’s former colleague and now competitor, “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams, is interviewing the president in New Orleans for Tuesday’s newscast as part of the network’s programming on the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
