Google CEO Eric Schmidt has joined Apple Computer’s board of directors, creating ties between two companies that have become major forces in the television industry since last year.

Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs last October set off seismic changes in the TV market when he allied with Walt Disney Co. CEO Robert Iger to offer ABC programs for sale on the iTunes download store. Mr. Schmidt is leading a company that also sells shows for download and is offering a service that can distribute video content from networks across sites on the Internet.

Mr. Schmidt joins existing Apple board members who include former Vice President Al Gore and chief executives from Genentech and Intuit.

“Eric is obviously doing a terrific job as CEO of Google, and we look forward to his contributions as a member of Apple’s board of directors,” Mr. Jobs said in a Tuesday statement.
