Even with ABC boasting the top show of the night in adults 18 to 49 with its “Dancing With the Stars” results show, NBC ranked as the top network for the evening in the demographic thanks to back-to-back episodes of “Dateline.”

“Dancing” got a 4.1 preliminary national rating in adults 18 to 49, a number that includes live viewing plus same-day viewing via digital video recorders, according to Nielsen Media Research. The 8 p.m. (ET) “Dancing” results show was up 17 percent from the year-ago time period premiere of “George Lopez,” and up 37 percent from the “Dancing” results show premiere in January.

The rest of the night was a disappointment for ABC, with its 9 p.m. block of fall sneak-peek shows scoring a 2.8 and a 2.0. At 10 p.m., the special “Jimmy Kimmel Live! All-Star Salute to Jimmy Kimmel Live!” scored a 1.7.

NBC’s “Dateline: To Catch a Predator” at 8 p.m. scored a 2.5, with a second episode of “Dateline” at 9 p.m. featuring a female teacher who had a sexual relationship with her 14-year-old student garnering a 3.9. At 10 p.m., a repeat of “Law & Order” (2.8) tied a repeat of “CSI: NY” on CBS.

The finale of summer reality series “Rockstar: Supernova” on CBS garnered a 3.0 at 8 p.m., good enough for second place in the time period behind “Dancing.”

Fox’s block of original programming gave it fourth-place status among the networks for the night in adults 18 to 49, with “Bones” at 8 p.m. scoring a 2.7 and the new legal drama “Justice” at a 2.5. “Justice” was down 11 percent from its performance last week.
