Meredith Vieira joined the cast of NBC’s “Today” show Wednesday morning, saying that she felt like “it’s the first day of school and I’m sitting next to the cutest guy,” referring to co-host Matt Lauer.

Despite bobbling her first try at telling viewers to stay tuned after a commercial break, Ms. Vieira was upbeat, mugging for the camera and dancing in the Rockefeller Center plaza.

Ms. Vieira, a former “60 Minutes” correspondent and host of “The View,” replaced Katie Couric, who started last week as anchor of “CBS Evening News.”

The “Today” show also unveiled its new set, which is outfitted for high-definition television.
