NBC’s Top Newscast in Total Viewers

“NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams” won the total viewership race and ABC’s “World News With Charles Gibson” won the demographic race that most drives the newscasts’ revenue potential the week of Oct. 16.

The “CBS Evening News” remains in an improved third place, and is touting its year-to-year growth while underscoring rival “Nightly’s” year-to-year losses in total viewership and the 25-to-54 demo.

According to Nielsen Media Research data, “NBC Nightly News” averaged 8.7 million total viewers, ABC’s “World News With Charles Gibson” averaged 8.5 million and CBS’s “Evening News With Katie Couric” averaged 7.6 million.

In the 25 to 54 demo, “World News” led with an average 2.8 million viewers. “Nightly News” was second with 2.7 million viewers and “Evening News” came in third with 2.5 million viewers.

For the week, “Nightly News” was down 8 percent year to year in total viewers and 12 percent in the demo. “World News” was up 2 percent in total viewers and flat in the demo. “Evening News” was up 4 percent in total viewers and up 11 percent in the demo year to year.
