Consortium Plans Wireless HD

Nov 9, 2006  •  Post A Comment

magine looking behind your HDTV and seeing … nothing at all.
That’s the premise of the WirelessHD Consortium, a group six major consumer electronics companies and a wireless technology start-up firm that last week announced they are developing a way to rid consumers of the tangled mass of wires that lurk behind most HD displays.
The consortium—LG Electronics, Matsushita (makers of the Panasonic brand), NEC, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and SiBEAM—are developing a short-range system for wireless home HD delivery.
The system would beam HD-quality audio and video from a signal source (such as a cable box or DVD player) to an HDTV from a range of about 32 feet. The technology is intended to replace current connection standards such as HDMI, component video, S-Video and others. Members of the consortium would build receiving technology into their TVs.
“The availability of high-definition wireless connections stands to eliminate the morass of cables, switches and other complexities,” said WirelessHD Chairman John Marshall. “WirelessHD will provide a high-speed wireless digital interface that will enable customers to simply connect, play, transmit and port their HD content in a secure manner.”
A few hitches still remain, according to an article in the San Jose Mercury News. Products won’t be available until 2008, chips may not yet be fast enough to support the technology, and computer makers are working on a similar wireless technology that could result in another format war, the article read.
