Discovery HD Theater took one giant leap for HD fans this week, airing the first hi-def live images from space.
Discovery and Japanese network NHK televised the event live from the International Space Station in conjunction with NASA. The images were a far cry from the usual grainy video associated with space broadcasts.
The special showed the Earth from orbit as well as the effects of weightlessness in the space station.
The footage was made possible thanks to the Space Shuttle Atlantis, which launched in September carrying a Sony HD 750A camera and new HD transmission hardware. Online, fans expressed enthusiasm about the coverage.
Discovery will rerun the footage Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. (ET) and Nov. 18 at 8 a.m.
