FSN Plans to Double HD Output

Nov 9, 2006  •  Post A Comment

Fox’s regional sports networks are set to announce a major increase in their hi-def programming output. FSN plans to double its HD telecasts for major live events over the next year.
That translates to about 1,000 games (or 2,500 hours, about 25 percent of FSN’s schedule) for the 2006-07 sports season, showcasing regular-season games from the National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, National Hockey League and NCAA Football.
Fox Sports Net claims it will surpass cable sport titan ESPN this year in terms of its volume of HD event telecasts. ESPN produces about 600 live sporting events, plus the network televises coverage of programs such as “SportsCenter” in the format.
Doug Sellars, senior VP of production for FSN, said demand from cable operators continues to drive HD expansion. “The demand is there,” he said, “and it’s come to a point where it’s not as astronomically expensive now that the trucks are all in place.”
FSN is building a new technical operations center in Houston, expected to open in fall 2007, that will provide FSN with a greater capacity to transmit HD programming.
FSN regional networks contributing local HD game production include FSN Arizona, FSN Detroit, FSN Florida, FSN Indiana, FSN Midwest, FSN North, FSN Northwest, FSN Ohio, FSN Pittsburgh, FSN Rocky Mountain, FSN South, FSN Southwest, FSN Houston, FSN Utah, FSN West, Prime Ticket, SportSouth and Sun Sports.
