Google Video Showing School Spirit

Google Video has turned to college football to augment the variety of content on its online video service.

The site added a new feature Thursday that lets fans upload their own college football-related videos. The videos will live alongside content that Google Video producers create as they embark on a tour of four of the hottest college football rivalries, starting with the Ohio State vs. Michigan game on Nov. 18. This twin approach to the college football video component of Google Video is emblematic of a current trend in online video to link professionally crafted content with viral video.

In conjunction with the new feature, which is accessible through the main Google Video page and also at Video.google.com/touchdown, Google Video will send a crew to the Texas A&M vs. Texas game on Nov. 24, the Florida State vs. Florida matchup on Nov. 25 and the UCLA vs. USC bout on Dec. 12, in addition to the Ohio State-Michigan game. At those games, the crew will encourage fans to showcase their “off-the-field highlights” and footage of “school spirit,” Google said in a statement.

Fans can also simply view the videos already available on the service.
