“American Idol” producers will take to the Web to hold a contest that will select a song to be performed in the final round of the singing competition.

Once the top 10 songs submitted by aspiring songwriters are chosen, “Idol” viewers will get to decide which is performed by the singers on the show in its final round, said executive producer Nigel Lythgoe.

“It’s going to be offered to America to decide what should be the ‘Idol’ song this year,” Mr. Lythgoe said in an interview with TelevisionWeek Publisher Chuck Ross for TVWeek.com’s Backlot Talk podcast feature.

To hear Mr. Lythgoe’s teaser about surprises that viewers will see when “American Idol” heads to Birmingham for the next show, go to TVWeek.com’s Backlot Talk for a podcast and Webcast of the interview and a transcript.
