Ancier Named President of BBC America

Garth Ancier has been named president of BBC Worldwide America, a new position in which he is to oversee all BBC Worldwide activity in this country. He will be based in New York.

Mr. Ancier will be charged with developing the BBC brand in the U.S., and expanding BBC Worldwide’s portfolio of channels beyond the flagship BBC America cable channel, now in more than 53 million homes. He also is to work with U.S. networks on behalf of L.A.-based BBC Worldwide Productions — including ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” and NBC’s “Grease: You’re the One that I Want!” and recently announced three scripted pilots picked-up by U.S. networks — and to develop more shows and formats.

Mr. Ancier also will manage BBC Worldwide’s U.S. TV and video sales business and oversee the introduction of the Web-based program delivery system, bbc.com, which is currently in the process of approval.

“Garth has an impeccable pedigree in U.S. media,” BBC Worldwide CEO John Smith said in the announcement made Tuesday of Mr. Ancier’s hire. “His experience with America’s most formidable networks, in both traditional and new media, will be fantastic for us as we grow the BBC brand in this market. Bringing all of our businesses in the U.S. under the guidance of someone with Garth’s experience and vision will be invaluable for BBC Worldwide as we move to double the scale of our business in this territory.”

Mr. Ancier will report to Mr. Smith will sit on and be accountable to the BBC Worldwide Americas Board along with Darren Childs, managing director, Global Channels; David Moody, managing, director, Digital Media; Mark Young, director Global Sales; and Wayne Garvie, director Content & Production.

Mr. Ancier’s resume includes significant leadership positions are Fox, NBC, CNN, The WB, and most recently In2TV.
