Cold and Crabby Again

Feb 21, 2007  •  Post A Comment

It’s almost crab season again on the Discovery Channel.
The network is going back to the Bering Sea for a third season of its highest-rated series, “Deadliest Catch,” which drew nearly 3 million viewers per week last season.
New episodes start April 3 at 9 p.m. ET.
This season the quest is for opilio crab, and the fishermen will endure subzero temperatures, 60-mile-per-hour winds and waves as high as four-story buildings, all the while working on just three to four hours of sleep.
One major challenge in that weather is keeping ice from forming on the deck, which would make the boat top-heavy. To prevent capsizing, the crew has to stop fishing and spend hours clearing the ice with sledgehammers.
The crew of the Northwestern returns to the show, joined this year by the crew of the Wizard.
Viewers who want to test their own crab-fishing skills will be able to try out a new online game at discovery.com/deadliestcatch.
“Deadliest Catch” is produced for Discovery by Original Productions. Thom Beers and Jeff Conroy are executive producers.
