It’s nice to be right. Ten years ago, this magazine, then called Electronic Media, published an article under the headline “Media Buying: Finding the Next Generation of Standouts.” In it, an unnamed TV sales chief quipped to the reporter, “[You want me to name] the next Jon Mandel? That’s a scary thought.” Then, in all seriousness he nominated Mr. Mandel’s two top lieutenants. One of them was Donna Speciale. Mr. Mandel seconded the nomination, recalling Ms. Speciale’s dedication: “She was in the hospital after having her first kid, and she was on the phone with
me checking on marketing conditions.”
In the past 10 years Ms. Speciale has lived up to that promise. There has been no hotter media shop in the past few years than MediaVest, and no buyer smarter and more respected than Ms. Speciale. We could not be more pleased that she has been named our 2007 Media Buyer of the Year.
