Once again “American Idol” showrunnner and Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe, in his weekly discussion with TelevisionWeek Editorial Director Chuck Ross, said that there will soon be a huge announcement that involves “American Idol” and America.

On Thursday night’s program, the upcoming musical guests for this season were announced, including Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez. But still to come is the “the biggest thing to happen to ‘Idol’ in five years,” that Mr. Lythgoe mentioned last week exclusively to TVWeek.

Mr. Lythgoe said it was not an appearance by Paul McCartney, and again said it wasn’t an appearance by Michael Jackson. In fact, he said it doesn’t involve an appearance by anybody. What could it be? Mr. Lythgoe said he’d probably be able to discuss it next week.

Mr. Ross thinks he has an idea.

“Of course I have no inside knowledge whatsoever,” Mr. Ross said. “But listening to what Nigel told me, I suspect that it has something to do with “Idol” asking folks to raise money for some important cause. Maybe it involves a concert.”
