CBS News is soliciting online video, text journalism and discussion from college students for a new initiative, also providing students a chance to compete for a summer 2007 internship with “CBS Evening News” anchor Katie Couric.

The news division’s partners in the initiative, titled Springboard, are CBS Interactive’s CBSNews.com and College Sports Television’s U-WIRE, a daily video and text news service produced by and for college students at more than 800 colleges and universities.

“We’re using the Internet, where so many college students get much of their news, to create a unique opportunity for aspiring journalists,” Ms. Couric said in the announcement. “‘Springboard’ allows us to tap into the diverse pool of young talent out there who shares my passion for the news. I know that my internships were invaluable as I pursued a career in journalism.”

Information about how and what to submit — the deadline is April 7 — and participating colleges is available at uwire.com. The winner of the New York-internship will be announced April 30.
