Panasonic Announces 2007 Plasma Pricing

Plasma HDTV market leader Panasonic has announced its full lineup of new models for 2007.
Panasonic’s new line will introduce the first 42-inch 1080p plasma TV in June with a retail price of $2,499. The company also will have a 50-inch 1080p model ($3,499) and a 58-inch version ($4,799) this month.
The company is dropping its 37-inch model. The rival LCD technology has conquered the marketplace among smaller screen models, making it difficult for Panasonic to be competitive in the under-40-inch category.
The company’s move to introduce a 1080p 42-inch likely was due to LCD competition as well, although some experts maintain that’s too small a screen size for viewers to notice the benefits of 1080p (versus the traditional HD standard of 720p).
“We have every intention of maintaining the market-share lead that we’ve held for virtually the last two years,” said Dennis Eppel, VP, Panasonic. “With additional manufacturing capacity, we expect to address a planned 11.5 million-unit production schedule for 2008.”
Panasonic’s 2007 models began their rollout last month with its keystone 42-inch 720p model (now priced at $1,599) and 50-inch 720p ($2,499).
