A&E Returns to Original Scripted Programming

A&E Network is remaking the medical thriller “Andromeda Strain” as part of its return to the original scripted programming business.
A&E also unveiled six drama series in development, including “The Cleaner,” about a man who after kicking his own addictions forms a team to help others kick theirs; “Homestead,” about an LAPD program that has officers live in the tough neighborhoods they patrol, and “Under,” about a young thug who joins the witness protection program, then becomes a New York City policeman.
The new shows are part of what A&E Television Networks CEO Abbe Raven said was a $600 million investment in new content, media, technology and infrastructure. Last year, the company invested $500 million in new content.
In prepared remarks for A&E’s upfront presentation on Tuesday, Ms. Raven said A&E is in the third phase of a plan to revitalize the network. Phase one was successful reality programming including “Dog The Bounty Hunter” and “Criss Angel Mindfreak,” that lowered the network’s median age. Phase two was investing in off-network dramas including “CSI: Miami” and “The Sopranos.” Phase three is developing “signature drama series” for the network.
A&E is working with filmmakers Ridley and Tony Scott as executive producers on “The Andromeda Strain,” which will run for four hours. Production is slated to begin this summer.
The network also has new reality series in the pipeline, including: “The Two Coreys,” which follows Corey Haim as he moves in with former movie co-star Corey Feldman.
