Fred Thompson to Leave ‘Law & Order’

May 30, 2007  •  Post A Comment

Fred Dalton Thompson, the former Republican U.S. senator who for five years has played a district attorney on “Law & Order,” is leaving the show after reports surfaced that he is ready to announce the formation of a presidential exploratory committee.
“I’ve spoken to Fred today, and although he told me he has not made a firm decision about the political future, he felt that given the creative and scheduling constraints of the upcoming season, he asked to be released from his responsibilities to the show,” “Law and Order” creator and executive producer Dick Wolf said in a statement Wednesday.
Mr. Thompson, an actor before he entered politics, served as a Tennessee senator until 2002, when he joined the cast of NBC’s “Law and Order.”
Forming the exploratory committee will allow Mr. Thompson to begin to raise funds for a presidential campaign, while leaving open the option of not proceeding with a run.
Greg Baumann contributed to this report.
