Maggie Rodriguez, who has been lead anchor for CBS-owned WFOR-TV in Miami, on June 1 will become co-anchor of CBS’s “The Saturday Early Show.”
Ms. Rodriguez will replace Tracy Smith, who is to continue as “Early Show” national correspondent while reporting for the “CBS Evening News With Katie Couric” and “CBS News Sunday Morning.”
CBS has yet to name name Ms. Rodriguez’s “Saturday” co-anchor. CBS News has been auditioning CBS News and CBS Sports personnel on the show in the months since founding “Saturday” co-anchor Russ Mitchell became weekday “Early Show” news anchor and Sunday “Evening News” anchor.
Among those considered to be viable candidates are “NFL Today” host James Brown, WCBS-TV anchor Chris Wragge and “Early Show” national correspondent Jeff Glor.
CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus said he thinks any questions about potential viewer disruption as a result of changing both anchors on “Saturday” will “evaporate” quickly.
“In addition to her anchoring and reporting experience, Maggie has the ability to connect with viewers because of her remarkable warmth and authenticity,” Mr. McManus said. “She has the perfect set of qualities to become an outstanding morning news anchor.”
Before joining WFOR in 2000, Ms. Rodriguez was a mid-day anchor and reporter at KABC-TV in Los Angeles for six years. After spending a year in off-camera roles for Univision-owned WLTV-TV in Miami, she became a Miami-based reporter for Univision. She has received six Emmy Awards and two RTNDA Murrow Awards.
