NBC Universal is joining parent company General Electric’s “ecoimagination” initiative with the launch of a company-wide program aimed at lowering greenhouse gas emissions at least 3 percent by 2012 and by making its TV and film production and theme parks environmentally conscious.
The program, called Get On Board, also will involve local incentives and an employee education program, as well as The NBCU Green Panel, headed by Bravo President Lauren Zalaznick, dedicated to environmental initiatives.
News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch earlier this month declared his company would cut its carbon footprint 10 percent by 2012 and would be carbon-neutral in 2010. He also said News Corp. outlets would carry complementary programming and content.
“Now is the time for us not just to think green but to act green,” said Jeff Zucker, NBCU President and CEO, in Thursday’s announcement. “We must run our businesses in a way that respects and protects our most valuable resource, the environment. This comprehensive program is a first series of steps that we hope will set a new course for the entire industry.”
NBCU said the steps began with its film “Evan Almighty,” which “zeroed out” its carbon emissions with efforts that included a donation to the Conservation Fund, which planted more than 2,000 trees, and by giving all the landscaping, lumber, windows and other reusable materials to Habitat for Humanity.
Get on Board also will include extensive recycling programs and maximizing the use of nontoxic cleaning products and low-emission paints, sealants and lacquers.
NBCU’s assorted networks, stations and digital platforms will feature public service announcements, editorial content and tips tailored to their audiences.
NBC News has named Anne Thompson its chief environmental affairs correspondent.
In addition, the “Live Earth” concert on July 7 will be carried across NBC Universal’s television networks and on other platforms around the globe.
