Nielsen Launches VideoCensus

Online audience measurement service Nielsen//NetRatings introduced an online video measurement service today. Dubbed VideoCensus, the new service combines panel and census measurement to report on audience size, demographic composition, engagement and competitive activity, Nielsen said.
Online video has exploded in usage over the last year, but few third-party research tools have been available to measure the views. As a result, sites that stream video either measure the numbers themselves or not at all.
Nielsen said the VideoCensus tool lets online video publishers, technology providers and networks attach “a simple piece of NetRatings code to their video delivery platforms” to collect a census count of video views.
Nielsen will also include information on viewer engagement with specific video channels, programs, and clips, the company said.
Clients have been using the service since January and Nielsen plans to introduce a new version in October.
