Thompson Could Make Bid for White House

May 30, 2007  •  Post A Comment

NBC Universal is so far declining comment on the status of Fred Thompson on “Law & Order” in the wake of reports that the former Tennessee Republican senator is readying to announce a presidential exploratory committee.
Mr. Thompson, an actor before he entered politics, has played District Attorney Arthur Branch on the TV show since shortly after announcing his Senate departure in 2002.
Forming the exploratory committee will allow Mr. Thompson to begin to raise funds for a presidential campaign, while leaving open the option of not proceeding.
Mr. Thompson’s continuing presence on the show could present some interesting challenges to NBC if he does become a GOP candidate.
Any shows shot for next season would likely air during a period of Republican primaries and caucuses potentially giving candidate Thompson a visibility advantage not enjoyed by presidential rivals.
