“Grey’s Anatomy” ensemble player Isaiah Washington will not return to the hit ABC series this fall, network sources confirmed.
The actor’s contract was not renewed by ABC Television Studios, which produces the series.
Through his publicist, Mr. Washington responded to his dismissal with a statement quoting the classic film “Network:” “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.”
The firing follows five months of bitter and awkward public fallout after Mr. Washington used an anti-gay slur to describe fellow castmember T.R. Knight. Mr. Washington’s troubles deepened after repeating — yet denying — using the slur during an interview at the Golden Globes in January. Outrage from castmembers and the media prompted Mr. Washington try and salvage his reputation by meeting with gay and lesbian groups and filming a public service announcement against hurtful speech that aired during a “Grey’s” episode.
ABC declined to comment.
