Jul 15, 2007  •  Post A Comment

Title: Agent
Date of birth: May 20, 1981
Place of birth: Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Big break: Being introduced to Creative Artists Agency and agent Alan Berger by a friend.
Who knew?? “I am obsessed with watching Nick at Nite. I watch it mostly to go to sleep,” says Ms. Ross, whose TV is nearly always on. She majored in political communications at George Washington University, where she wrote a paper on the political ramifications of “All in the Family.”
As any journalist knows, being in the right place at very interesting times pays off, if only in invaluable experience.
That certainly has been true for Andrea Ross, an agent in Creative Artists Agency’s broadcasting and news division.
For instance, on Sept. 11, 2001, she was interning with Washingtonpost.com when terrorists hijacked four airliners, one of which crashed into the Pentagon. The story created tremendous demand for Post print reporters to appear on TV from their far-flung posts, and Ms. Ross said it was “amazing” to be involved in their media training.
In 2006 she was named an agent at CAA after a two-year stint as an assistant to Alan Berger, whose eclectic client list includes “Deadwood” producer David Milch, “CBS Evening News” anchor/managing editor Katie Couric and George Stephanopoulos, moderator of “This Week” for ABC News.
“Andrea is a bright, hard-working and dedicated agent who brings tremendous insight, great instincts and a fun approach to the business,” Mr. Berger said.
Now she has her own diverse roster of writers, producers, directors, production companies and others.
It’s no wonder Ms. Ross said on an average day she feels as though she has 10 jobs. “It’s the nature of our jobs.”
Ms. Ross works closely with CAA client Simon Cowell and his production company, Syco, and played a role in the development and sale of such shows as “American Inventor,” “America’s Got Talent” and “Celebrity Duets.” She also locked down his appearance in the “The Simpsons Movie.”
She has brokered deals for style maven Bobbie Thomas; “CBS Sunday Morning” correspondent Serena Altschul; SuChin Pak, an MTV News anchor and host of “Drinks With SuChin” on LX TV; Morgan Webb, host of G4’s “X-Play”; and E! news anchor Giuliana DePandi, who recently agreed to be a correspondent for “The CBS Early Show” and to create, produce and host “Rapping With the Stars” for MTV.
Among her emerging Web clients are Lindsey Campbell of wallstrip.com and Joanne Colan of rocketboom.com.
“I’m lucky to deal with so many different people who have so many different jobs and work with them to find their passions and create their next jobs. I never get bored. I’m always doing something different,” said Ms. Ross.
“I think it’s a time of a lot of change. There are a lot of opportunities for younger talent now, for people to start making their marks as the new Dan Rathers and Peter Jennings and Walter Cronkites. There also are opportunities in other areas of news, with broadband and online content becoming more pertinent. … My clients understand it’s not about being in one place and having one job now. It’s about extending their roles throughout all mediums,” she said.
“Things are cyclical in the news business. … Content is king. The news business is going to continue to thrive. People are always going to be watching. We do our jobs and wait it out a bit.”
