‘General Hospital’ Spin-Off a Hit for SoapNet

SoapNet’s original “General Hospital” spin-off drew the highest ratings in the network’s history when it debuted on Thursday.
“General Hospital: Night Shift” drew record numbers of total viewers, women 18-34 and women 18-49 to the Disney-owned SoapNet.
The weekly primetime show is scheduled to air for 13 weeks, but the big numbers already are raising questions about whether the series will be extended.
Speaking Saturday at the Television Critics Association meeting in Los Angeles, SoapNet general manager Deborah Blackwell said no decision has been made yet, but, “I’m very open to the idea of just continuing on immediately to the second cycle.”
She added, “The only reason for having a hiatus [would be for] letting everybody just get a rest.”
“General Hospital” shoots four days a week, and “Night Shift” is produced on the fifth day.
“Certainly if the audience continues to respond as it is, then we’ll just make as many of them as we can,” Ms. Blackwell said.
