NBC News Consolidates Production

Jul 10, 2007  •  Post A Comment

NBC News has merged several units, including “Dateline NBC,” under the label of Peacock Production, creating a one-stop shop for entities, inside and outside the NBC Universal family, seeking long-form nonfiction programming.
NBC News President Steve Capus is president of Peacock Productions. “Dateline” executive producer David Corvo is executive VP of the new unit. Senior VP of the new unit is Sharon Scott, executive producer of a number of projects from NBC News Productions and NBC Media Productions, two of the units forming Peacock Productions.
Also part of Peacock Productions are Elizabeth Cole, executive editor of “Dateline NBC” and news specials for NBC; “Dateline NBC” managing editor Aretha Marshall, vice president of the new entity, responsible for booking and casting; Benjamin Ringe, president of development and executive producer of multiplatform programming and unique content; Jim Gerety, executive director of Peacock Productions; Knute Walker, executive producer of news and media productions; and Tim Peek, executive producer for the digital programming entity NBC Next Media.
“Our mandate at NBC News is to reach as many people as possible at any time, in any place and on any platform,” Mr. Capus said in Tuesday’s announcement. “The creation of Peacock Productions will not only enable us to reach more people in new ways and places, but it also underscores how we are transforming from a news organization into a news and information organization.”
Mr. Corvo said, “At a time when producing for only one outlet has now become an old idea, this is a remarkable opportunity for some of the best storytellers in the business. They will have more creative freedom than ever before and be able to reach a larger, worldwide audience on a regular basis.
“We want everyone in the business to know we are not just a newsmagazine unit,” he said.
The variety of programming already produced by Peacock components ranges from “Dateline,” MSNBC documentaries and the NBC Universal syndicated weekly series “Your Total Health” with NBC News correspondent Hoda Kotb to A&E’s “Dog the Bounty Hunter” and the Discovery Channel’s “Global Warming: What You Need to Know,” reported by former “NBC Nightly News” anchor Tom Brokaw.
Also in the works: pilots for two reality series, one about an all-female detective agency and one in which flamboyant “Today” show security contributor “Wild Bill” Stanton gives information about personal protection.
Peacock also will include a dedicated team to produce the 10-minute daily newscast for Channel One, a new bit of business for NBC News that was announced Monday.
In an unrelated deal, NBC News announced its archives will be digitally mastered and distributed by Thought Equity Motion.
