Sony Offers Combo Computer-HDTV

Who says you can’t have your computer and HDTV, too? Sony on Monday announced the launch of the first all-in-one high-definition PC and TV combination featuring Blu-ray DVD disc technology.
The Vaio LT HD PC/TV features a 22-inch diagonal widescreen display and serves as a computer entertainment center, allowing users to watch and record analog, digital and cable television shows, including premium HD channels. A cable card is required.
Sony’s new device comes in both standard and high-def models priced at roughly $1,900 and $2,900, respectively. The Blu-ray disc optical drive on the HD version allows users to watch movies in high definition as well as record, store and play back personal content on BD media, which holds up to 50 GB on a single disc, the company said.
“The LT model has everything you need—it’s a PC and HDTV set in one breathtaking device,” Mike Abary, senior VP of Vaio product marketing at Sony Electronics, said in a statement. “It’s the ultimate showstopper for media lovers who appreciate high-def performance and cutting-edge technology in a space-saving design.”
Sony said this new model’s mounting capability—the mount is sold separately—can benefit consumers looking to maximize space. In addition, the unit has an A/V power button that allows users to shut off the TV function while the computer continues to run in the background. As a result, users don’t have to wait for the PC to shut down or boot up to use the television function.
Bruce Leichtman, principal of Leichtman Research, said he thinks the new device is an interesting idea, but may not be a huge hit with the average consumer.
“It’s clearly a niche of a niche of a niche group who this appeals to,” he said. “The majority of people aren’t going to use this for TV. They might possibly use it to watch Blu-ray DVDs, which is an interesting scenario.”
Mr. Leichtman said a consumer probably could buy a bigger TV plus a Blu-ray player for the price of this new product.
The LT HD model will be available in October, the company said.

  1. The two new Sony models sound like a good blending of computer and HDTV – but it will take awhile to bring down the price and capture consumer interest – hopefully, they will bring out a notebook with the same features.

  2. Sounds a little pricey for the market of average consumers. I love to watch TV and check my email, do on-line banking and surf, and I was not sure from the article if this allowed for both to happen simultaneously. Also, if they had an antenna for RF reception that would be a very good idea, as the best-quality picture of HDTV will be coming in from broadcasters over-the-air signal, rather than from the limited bandwidth the cable companies have to offer viewers as they try to cram all their channels into the wired-cable-delivery formula. They should plan to make cable consumers happy as well as considerations for people who watch traditional broadcast (FREE!) TV via antenna.
