‘Early Show’ Names Shelley Ross Senior Executive Producer

Former “Good Morning America” executive producer Shelley Ross is rejoining the morning-show wars as senior executive producer of the “The Early Show” on CBS. She will report to CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus effective Sept. 17.
The announcement Monday came after weeks of speculation that the famously hard-charging Ms. Ross would be tapped to improve the performance and fortunes of the CBS morning show that has, through many incarnations, titles and decades, remained mired in distant third place.
Ms. Ross is ferociously competitive executive producer who, over more 5 ½ years, stopped the ratings freefall “GMA” had been in after she became executive producer and Charles Gibson and Diane Sawyer became co-anchors in 1999.
“Shelley has not only fought the fight in morning news, but, most important, she has achieved success,” Mr. McManus said in Monday’s announcement. “She has an amazing understanding of the morning audience and the unique genre that is morning news. Beginning Jan. 7, all CBS stations will carry our full two-hour program, which puts ‘The Early Show’ on a level playing field with our competitors. That very important change, along with Shelley’s expert leadership, is a significant step for CBS News and our ability to truly compete in this daypart.”
“I am thrilled to be joining ‘The Early Show’ at a time of shifting sands in the morning landscape, and I am proud to be a part of Sean McManus’ team at CBS News,” Ms. Ross said. “The commitment to turn ‘The Early Show’ into the ‘one to watch’ is backed up with the division’s overall commitment to journalistic excellence.”
According to the announcement, there are “active discussions” about possible new roles at CBS News for Steve Friedman, another veteran of the morning-show wars who has been morning broadcast VP, and Michael Bass, who has been “Early Show” senior executive producer since May 2002 after leaving a key position at NBC’s top-ranked “Today” show.
