John Larroquette Adapting to ‘Boston Legal’ Ensemble

John Larroquette is joining the cast of “Boston Legal” for its upcoming fourth season, playing Carl Sack, a senior partner who transfers from the New York office to Beantown. He’ll be a rival of sorts to Denny Crane (William Shatner) and will have an affair with Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen).
“It’s the most difficult thing I’ve ever done,” Mr. Larroquette said at an Aug. 14 event in honor of the show. “In most shows I’ve been the center of the hub. Being part of a true ensemble is an amazing learning experience for an actor.”
Continuing the show’s irreverence off-camera, co-star James Spader immediately chimed in with, “Shirley is the hub, so you’re at the center of it still.”
Co-star William Shatner chipped in, “But only if you have an axle to grind.”
When the audience responded with mock-groans, Mr. Shatner quipped, “I only do well if it’s written for me.”
Mr. Larroquette previously won one of his four Emmys for a guest arc — as a different character — on ABC’s “The Practice,” the show from which “Boston Legal” was spun off. After a highlight reel from past episodes, “An Evening With ‘Boston Legal'” offered a five-minute preview of the fourth season, which begins Sept. 25.
