Univision CEO Joe Uva is shaking up the Spanish-language giant’s ad sales operation.
Former MTV Networks executive David Lawenda is joining Univision Communications as president of ad sales.
Meanwhile, longtime co-presidents of advertising sales for the Univision networks Dennis McCauley and Tom McGarrity have resigned, effective Sept. 30.
“David is a terrific executive with an industrywide reputation as a motivational and creative leader, as well as a demonstrated track record of exceeding sales goals, increasing advertiser bases, and developing groundbreaking cross-platform initiatives,” said Mr. Uva, who before joining Univision ran ad buyer OMD and previously was head of ad sales for Turner Broadcasting.
“David’s experience and expertise, coupled with the exceptional talent across all of Univision’s divisions, will ensure the company’s continued strong performance and superior competitive positioning as we work to realize the benefits of a fully integrated sales structure that effectively leverages all of our assets to benefit marketers,” added Mr. Uva.
At MTV Networks, a unit of Viacom, Mr. Lawenda was senior VP, responsible for advertising sales for VH1, VH1 Classic, VH1 Soul, Logo and The N. At MTVN, he also oversaw sales when Spike TV was relaunched as a network for men.
Mr. McCauley and Mr. McGarrity will remain as consultants to Univision for a transitional period.
“Both Dennis and Tom approached me a few months ago and expressed their desire to move on to the next stage of their careers,” Mr. Uva said in a statement Tuesday. “We would like to thank them for their unwavering dedication to Univision and wish them all the best. We will miss them but understand their decision, which had nothing to do with the restructuring of the ad sales function. Dennis and Tom have been integral parts of the Univision family for more than a decade and their contributions to the growth and success of this organization cannot be overstated.”
Univision said Judy Kenny will continue to oversee sales as executive VP of the Univision network. Carlos Deschappelles continues as senior VP for TeleFutura and David Grossman continues as VP sales for Galavision Network.
Those three executives will report to Mr. Lawenda.
