NBC Goes Green With Consolidation of L.A. Operations at Red Line Station

Oct 11, 2007  •  Post A Comment

Conceptual Rendering of NBC Universal's West Coast News HeadquartersNBC Universal is on a high-tech, green consolidation streak that extends from the newly constructed NBC News world headquarters, being shown off to the press Thursday afternoon at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan, to long-term plans for a similar approach for housing NBC News’ Los Angeles bureau, network-owned KNBC-TV and KVEA-TV and “Access Hollywood.”
The West Coast facility will be the anchor tenant in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Red Line Subway Station in Universal City, directly across the street from Universal Studios and Universal Studios Hollywood theme park and CityWalk. The location, still in the design and environmental review stage, is part of a proposed development by Thomas Properties Group.
The new facility is meant to be an example of sustainable green design, construction and transit-oriented development. The project is being proposed to achieve the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Green Building Rating at the Silver certification level for its design and construction as well as its ongoing operations. The project will integrate the latest in renewable power and energy- and water-efficient technologies.
It also will house newsgathering, broadcasting, editing and production facilities for all network and local news operations and technological platforms. It will include a street-side studio that allows visitors and transit users to become part of the live backdrop for local newscasts and network productions as well as when “Today” and “NBC Nightly News” originate from Los Angeles.
“This facility represents the future of local content gathering,” KNBC President and General Manager Linda Sullivan said in the announcement. “The content center will improve our newsgathering capabilities, allowing us to leverage the power of the entire NBC portfolio and focus on what we do best—local content creation that is relevant to our viewers and easily accessible on all media platforms.”
The New York facility, which has been under construction for six months, was built to consolidate personnel and operations for local, network and MSNBC, which is vacating its home of 11 years in Secaucus, N.J.
