User-Gen Video Site Vimeo Goes HD
Video-sharing site Vimeo, owned by Barry Diller’s IAC, is slated to announce that it will be distributing HD-quality videos, according to a report in the New York Post. The video will have a resolution of 1280×720 pixels compared with the typical 320×240 resolution seen on many other user-generated video sites, the report said. This would make it the first site of its kind to offer HD user-gen videos.
Vimeo founder Jakob Lodwick told the Post that HD is a good investment for the site because most of its users are amateur filmmakers, not just casual fans who are ripping content and reposting. Vimeo has 250,000 registered users and a library of more than 300,000 videos, the article said.
Disney and Blu-ray Go BOGO
The format war wages on. Retailers such as Best Buy and Circuit City as well as Amazon.com are participating in a “buy one get one free” sale on select Disney Blu-ray titles, according to High-Def Digest. The discs offered vary by retailer, but some titles include “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” “Apocalypto” and “The Prestige,” the report said. Sources tell the publication the sale is scheduled to run through Oct. 20, while supplies last.
Verizon FiOS Launches A&E HD, Fox Business Network
Verizon FiOS TV, a television system powered by fiber optics, on Monday launched A&E HD as well as the new Fox Business Network in standard definition. Both networks will be available in all FiOS markets, the company said.
“We’re continuing to add great programming to keep Verizon FiOS TV at the head of the pack,” Terry Denson, VP of Verizon FiOS TV content and programming, said in a statement. “Customers deserve it, and we’re determined to stay No. 1.” HD channels are offered through FiOS TV Premier with no additional service fee. With these additions, the company offers roughly 30 HD channels, including local networks, in most markets, according to TVPredictions.
