ABC Ups O’Brian to Senior VP for News

Nov 8, 2007  •  Post A Comment

The restructuring at ABC News continues with the promotion of veteran Kate O’Brian to senior VP for news. In her new position, Ms. O’Brian will oversee newsgathering, the Washington bureau, NewsOne, ABC News Radio and affiliate relations.
Ms. O’Brian, most recently vice president of the NewsOne affiliate service, has been working on a universal newsgathering operation to pare down redundancy.
She started with ABC News as a desk assistant to David Brinkley.
“She is a strong leader and manager,” ABC News President David Westin said in an internal memo Thursday.
He also said a new position of executive editor will report to Ms. O’Brian, with direct oversight of all newsgathering and the assignment of correspondents and crews.
The O’Brian appointment sends Mimi Gurbst to a new post as senior producer of “World News with Charles Gibson,” with responsibility for futures and features.
“Mimi has done a superb job of leading our news coverage for 14 years, supervising and developing the best group of bureau correspondents and producers anywhere,” Mr. Westin wrote. “Charlie, Jon [Banner] and their team have taken a first-rate broadcast to No. 1 in short order. By bringing Mimi’s strong editorial instincts to the fine journalists already at ‘World News,’ we are adding strength to strength.”
The moves follow by a few weeks the hiring of WABC-TV President and General Manager Dave Davis as executive VP of ABC News and a broad shuffle of duties among news division veterans.

Shame on ABC News for a pathetic debate last evening. I have watched ABC News regularly, but no longer. You were so partisan, so detached from policy issues, so out to get Senator Obama with George Stephanopoulos who owes his whole career to the Clinton administration. It took you over an hour to get to real policy issues that affect the lives of 306 million issues. There were so many tough issues you could have asked both candidates about why 300,000 Americans have as much wealth as the bottom 150 million USA citizens, and things like that, but your own advertisers would probably never let you ask such questions. You just went for the jugular. Charlie Gibson was the supposed leader of the debate, but he cow-towed to George Stephanopoulos who set the ABC ‘tone’ for the evening. You really disgraced yourselves in EVERY way, and I have lost respect even for Charlie Gibson. Good bye ABC News. Response please ? How can you defend what you did last night ??

  2. Shame on ABC News for your supposedly ‘neutral’ debate last evening. George Stephanopoulas owes his whole career to the Clintons and was hardly neutral or a good journalist. Charlie Gibson went along for the ride. No more ABC News for me. And I will tell my friends as well, and most of them agree too last night was a shameful ABC performance supposedly in the ‘public good’. Don’t think so.
