Clinton, Edwards Back Striking Writers

Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and John Edwards have issued statements of support for striking Hollywood writers.
“I support the Writers Guild’s pursuit of a fair contract that pays them for their work in all mediums,” Sen. Clinton said. “I hope the producers and writers will return to the bargaining table to work out an equitable contract that keeps our entertainment industry strong and recognizes the contributions writers make to the success of the industry.”
Sen. Edwards also voiced his support for the striking writers.
“The striking Writers Guild members are fighting an important battle to protect their creative rights,” he said. “These writers deserve to be compensated fairly for their work, and I commend their courage in standing up to big media conglomerates. As someone who has walked picket lines with workers all across America and as a strong believer in collective bargaining, I hope that both sides are able to quickly reach a just settlement.”
The statements come hours after Sen. Barack Obama made a similar announcement.
“I stand with the writers,” Mr. Obama said. “The guild’s demand is a test of whether media corporations are going to give writers a fair share of the wealth their work creates or continue concentrating profits in the hands of their executives. I urge the producers to work with the writers so that everyone can get back to work.”
The writers went on strike at 12:01 a.m. today after negotiations collapsed Sunday night.
Though many members of the Writers Guild of America and their network and studio employers are urging a return to the negotiation table, no further talks are currently scheduled.
