Patriots Set Record for CBS, NBC Taps Team for SNF

Nov 5, 2007  •  Post A Comment

The networks continue to capitalize on the National Football League’s undefeated New England Patriots.
With CBS scoring the highest-rated regular season game in the 1980s between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts, NBC has now tapped the November 18 game between the Patriots and the Buffalo Bills as its first “flex game” of the season. The game will replace the Bears/Seahawks game, which will now take the late afternoon slot on Fox.
“The Patriots quest for a perfect season is clearly the biggest story in the NFL,” said Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Universal, Sports and Olympics. “It’s also been 13 years since the NFL’s premier primetime game visited Buffalo and it will be quite a scene there.”
The “battle of the unbeatens” earned an average overnight household rating/share of 22.5/39 even outrating all four of the NFL Divisional playoff games last season and up 52 percent from last year’s ratings on CBS which earned a 14.8/27.

  1. Ebersol sure likes to embellish. If he recalls, the Bills hosted the Cowboys just a few weeks ago on MNF. So the fact that the Bills are hosting a primetime game is irrelevant. NBC is televising the game because of the undefeated Patriots and their top-5 TV market. It has nothing to do with “the scene” in Buffalo.

  2. To Jeremy:
Use your noggin Jeremy. Mr. Ebersol specifically said Buffalo hadn’t had “the NFL’s premier primetime game” in 13 years, thereby taking a shot at ESPN’s now secondary MNF. Everyone knows the Sunday nite game is the big game now, not MNF. Off topic, but when can we say goodbye to the unwatchable, unlistenable Tony Kornheiser? Ugh.

  3. FYI – Boston is ranked #7 DMA, not 5.

  4. Wayne Rooney’s marital life was under strong pressure last evening after finally it was exposed that he’d some experiences with a hooker although his spouse was expecting a baby. I hope she divorces him like Tiger wood’s wife did, Idiot. adriana

  5. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
