Rounding Up HD News: An Early Look at Black Friday Sales

Nov 8, 2007  •  Post A Comment

It’s the most wonderful time of the year—Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, marks the official start of the holiday shopping season. TVPredictions.com has revealed some early sale details. Web site Gottadeal.com says Costco is planning to sell a Magnavox 42-inch 1080p LCD HDTV for $999 and a Sharp 46-inch 1080p HDTV for $300 off the regular price. In addition, it says BlackFriday.info revealed that Sears will be selling a 42-inch LG plasma HDTV for $899, a Panasonic 56-inch 1080p HDTV for $1,199 and a Toshiba HD-A3 HD DVD player for $169.
Consumer Reports Rates HDTVs
Consumer Reports magazine determined that LCD and plasma TVs are generally reliable and don’t require very many repairs during their first three years of service, DigitalTrends.com reported. The article says most repairs for LCDs and plasmas fall under the manufacturer’s warranty, meaning the consumer doesn’t have to purchase an extended warranty. Rear-projection HDTVs had more problems than LCDs or plasmas, but Consumer Reports still doesn’t recommend getting an extended warranty unless there will be heavy use. The study found that LCD and plasmas had a 3% repair rate, compared with 18% for rear-projection televisions. Some brands with low repair rates include Sony, Sharp, Samsung, Toshiba, JVC, Panasonic and Pioneer. Dell and Hitachi LCDs and Philips plasma sets were found to be less reliable.
Warner Says It’s Still Sticking to Both Formats
During a Blu-ray festival last week, Warner Home Video VP of high-definition media said the company may be changing its strategy. This led some to believe Warner, which releases titles on both HD DVD and Blu-ray, soon may be choosing a side in the high-def DVD format war. However, Warner told HiDefDigest it has no plans to support either camp exclusively, according to Engadget HD. The article on Engadget’s site says this is probably true, but speculates that the studio probably would not tip its hand in advance if it were going to make a change this big.
