A compilation of strike news from around the Web.
‘Last Call With Carson Daly’ Back in Production
Carson Daly will be the first of the late-night hosts to cross the picket line and go back into production, the Hollywood Reporter reports.
Sources tell the Reporter that Mr. Daly is taping episodes for his show “Last Call With Carson Daly” this week for air next week.
Renewed Talks Continue Silently
The Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have agreed to meet for a third day of renewed labor talks, all under the cloak of a media blackout, Daily Variety says. With the WGA and the AMPTP back at the bargaining table, many showrunners have followed through with their pledge to return to work in a non-writing role, the newspaper reports.
The showrunners are returning with little fanfare in order to avoid seeming like they’re crossing the picket line, Daily Variety says.
Daly Sets Up Joke Hotline
In an e-mail obtained by Web site the Smoking Gun, Carson Daly has set up a phone number and is soliciting jokes from a select amount of friends and family for his show.
Mr. Daly’s e-mail stresses that the calls are not to make fun of striking writers, but was asking the recipients of his e-mail, including his mother and the executive producer of “Last Call,” to help out with his show, the Smoking Gun reports.
WGA Upset With Daly
In a statement, the Writers Guild of America expressed disappointment over Carson Daly’s return to his show, Broadcasting and Cable reports.
Mr. Daly, who is not a WGA member, has solicited jokes from non-guild members, which the WGA said was appalling, the newspaper says.
Picket Lines Combine Protest With Pizzazz
Picketing writers have used their creativity to voice their frustration with labor talks direct from the picket line, as horror writers performed a mock exorcism at the Warner Bros. lot on Tuesday, Daily Variety reports.
The lines themselves have become scenes, with NBC’s lot gathering attention for dancing picketers, while all-star writers like James L. Brooks and Carl Reiner have been spotted at various picket lines, the newspaper says.
Politician, Celebrities Out in Force at NYC Pickets
Danny Glover, Colin Quinn and presidential hopeful John Edwards took part in Tuesday’s Writers Guild of America, East, protest at Washington Square Park, Daily Variety says.
Several hundred arrived for the event, the newspaper reports.
Endemol Head Predicts Growth Based on Strike
European production company Endemol’s Chairman-CEO Aat Schouwenaar told the European Media Leaders Summit in London that a prolonged strike would benefit his company as U.S. studios would look to increase episode orders of nonscripted material, Daily Variety reports.
Endemol is behind such shows as “Deal or No Deal,” “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” and “Big Brother.”
