‘Daily Show,’ ‘Colbert Report’ Return Without Writers Jan. 7

Comedy Central said “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert Report” will resume production Jan. 7.
Both shows will return to the air that night without their union writing staffs.
Late-night shows on the broadcast networks also will return in early January.
Comedy Central said the return of the shows follows a scheduled two-week, end-of-year hiatus that was built into their production calendars.
The network said it continues to hold out hope for a swift resolution to the current Writers Guild of America strike.
The network also sent a statement from Mr. Stewart and Mr. Colbert: “We would like to return to work with our writers. If we cannot, we would like to express our ambivalence, but without our writers we are unable to express something as nuanced as ambivalence.”
