NATAS Challenges Arbitration Award

Dec 21, 2007  •  Post A Comment

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has filed a petition to remove an award of the American Arbitration Association in a case involving its sometimes partner and sometimes rival, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS).
The award held that Emmy Award contest categories should be classified by “genre” instead of “dayparts.” NATAS deems that interpretation to be the American Arbitration Association’s rewriting of the 30-year agreement fashioned by New York-based NATAS and Los Angeles-based ATAS in 1977.
ATAS claims that as part of the recent arbitration decision, NATAS cannot go forward with the 59th Annual Emmy Awards for Engineering and Technology, which are slated to be presented Jan. 7 in Las Vegas during the Consumer Electronics Show. Instead, ATAS says these awards must be presented in the context of one of NATAS’ other sanctioned Emmy events.
NATAS filed its petition Dec. 20 in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan. In its petition, NATAS cited the strong dissent of one of the judges on the arbitration panel to support its case.

  1. Natas spells Satan backwards.

  2. NATAS has no real purpose anymore. It was an ego trip by a guy called John Cannon….If they (NATAS) want to run the local TV academies including the LA local chapter…so be it. Everything else should be run by a single academy ATAS.
NATAS grow up. Give up. You are a throw back to the old days. And now, when you agree to an arbitration process and you run to the court when you lose you show what immature folks you really are.
