The player: Andrew Simon, chief executive officer of HDNet Fights
The play: Simon was hired by HDNet Chairman and Co-founder Mark Cuban in October to boost the company’s visibility and subscriber base from its current level of about 9 million subscribers. Simon is shooting for that goal by increasing broadcasts of mixed martial arts events while holding its own sanctioned bouts. HDNet Fights will broadcast 24 fights next year.
The pitch: Simon plans to take advantage of the Dallas Mavericks owner’s media properties by holding fights at Dallas’ American Airlines Center and broadcasting bouts at Cuban’s Landmark Theaters chain in 3-D. “We’ve been doing mixed martial arts for years, and we’re ready to jump in with our own fights,” Simon said. “This is something I’ve been passionate about since I was a kid.”
Backstory: The 37-year-old Long Island native had been with Cox Communications for four years before joining HDNet Fights, heading marketing and sales efforts in Las Vegas. A veteran of the hospitality industry and graduate of Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, Simon worked for Mirage Resorts (now MGM Mirage) and Wynn Resorts before joining Cox. He has an MBA from the Anderson School at UCLA.
