AT&T’s U-verse Adds Eight HD Channels
AT&T Inc.’s U-verse Internet television service added eight high-definition channels, bringing its total to more than 40. U-verse, which was started by the largest U.S. phone company last year, had about 125,000 subscribers as of Sept. 30. It offers channels such as Animal Planet, Discovery, Science Channel and Starz Kids & Family in HD, San Antonio-based AT&T said in a statement. U-verse will charge $10 a month for the HD package.
Sony Takes $100 Off Bravia HDTVs for Customers Who Recycle Old Sets
Sony Corp.’s Sony Style retail stores will give $100 coupons for Bravia HDTVs to customers who recycle old televisions at select Waste Management locations. Customers who recycle their old TVs at one of 80 U.S. Waste Management locations by March 15 will receive a coupon good for $100 off of Bravias, which range in price from $700 for a 26-inch flat-panel TV to $33,000 for a 70-inch version. Sony Style operates 56 stores in the U.S.
Time Warner Cable Plans HD Growth
Time Warner Cable will try to match competitor DirecTV’s selection of high-definition channels some time next year, the cable company’s chief told the Milwaukee Journal. The cable television unit of the world’s largest media company, which has about a third of the HD channels that DirecTV has, will be adding channels “rapidly,” said Glenn A. Britt, president and chief executive officer of Time Warner Cable, in an interview with the newspaper. “We are putting in technology where we will essentially be able to have unlimited high definition,” Britt told the Milwaukee Journal.
