Writers Counter Producers’ Proposal, Ask For Higher Internet Payout

In response to the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers digital media plan, the Writers Guild of America laid out its streaming media plan, which would increase Internet residuals, to its members yesterday.
The WGA said it would be willing to accept the framework for a fixed residual system, as suggested by the AMPTP.
“But rather than basing the residual for the entire first year on a small percentage of the applicable minimum, we proposed that the fixed residual be paid on a higher percentage of applicable minimum for each 100,000 streams per quarter,” the Guild said in a statement.
The AMPTP’s offer last week had suggested an Internet residual of less than $250 a year for an hour-long program, and zero residuals for streaming motion pictures.
After the first year, the Guild said it wants reuse to be paid out as 2.5% of the distributor’s gross, with theatrical movies reused over the Internet falling under the same umbrella.
Talks are expected to continue throughout the week.
