Writers Strike Damages Reaching Millions (or Billions)
No matter who you ask, the writers strike is racking up heavy financial costs to writers and to the city of Los Angeles, with low-end estimates around $380 million and upwards of $2.5 billion at the high end, Daily Variety reports.
These estimates came to light during a 75-minute meeting Wednesday with the L.A. City Council’s Housing Community & Economic Development Committee, which was meeting with Writers Guild of America leaders and supporters, the newspaper says.
The Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers did not send representatives to the meeting, the newspaper reports.
However, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. predicts L.A. will lose $220 million for every month the writers strike continues, the Hollywood Reporter reports.
That estimate is up 10% from the group’s previous estimate last month, the newspaper says.
People Choice Gets Strike-Related Makeover
The People’s Choice Awards, scheduled to air on CBS in January, will be retooled as a series of filmed reactions from winners, cutting out the need for a studio audience and a backstage press room, the Hollywood Reporter reports.
The shift from a live broadcast alleviates concerns that actors would have to cross a Writers Guild of America picket line, the newspaper says.
Worldwide Pants to Meet Friday With Writers Guild
Worldwide Pants, David Letterman’s production company, is meeting with the WGA to discuss an interim agreement that would allow “The Late Show With David Letterman” and “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson” to return to the airwaves with union writers, Deadline Hollywood Daily reports.
Most shows are set to return Jan. 2, but because Letterman owns his production company (as opposed to “The Tonight Show,” which is owned by NBC), “The Late Show” can work independently of CBS toward a contract with the guild, the blog reports.

  1. Look at all the damage those goddman writers are doing. I hope they’re happy. I hope they come out of this strike with so little money, they can’t even buy a pair of socks. Knuckleheads.

  2. Just goes to show you that unions are bad for America.

  3. Come on guys, these writers aren’t getting what’s rightfully theirs. I’m sorry you’re so pissed about there not being any new shows for you, but really, they’re just fighting for what’s theirs. I applaud them.

  4. First I lose House, now I’ve lost CSI. And the way it’s goin I’m not gonna be getting my Lost ix in the new year. What is their stinkin problem. I’m pretty sure they are all makin allot more money than most of us, and ok now we all no they write the damn shows!!

  5. i am a tv lover too but dont worry lost is returning january 31 with 8 out of 16 new shows kyly xy fans january 14 csi fans feb all others tbd pending the strike ps daytime soaps not afficted

  6. What’s wrong with you? Your TV is only as good as the talent that writes it. And that talent is worth every penny it makes. Have you all forgotten the abuses of companies throughout history? You think they gave you the 40 hour work week voluntarily? READ LABOR HISTORY and stop spouting off ideas and language that you heard somewhere and know nothing about first hand. Don’t be a 21st Century American and find out. Give up an hour of TV and get an education. If you think the writer’s make a lot of money, what do you think the producers and studios make? The labor movement has been eroded since Reagen busted the air taffic controllers union. And by the way, couch potatoes, American wages have remained flat since. How’s your money situation?

  7. Writers deserve more credit that they are currently receiving. How many writers can any of us truly name? Very few compared to the names of the Directors we know. Give them the credit they deserve and let me go back to watching Heroes.

  8. to add to my comment i do support the writers but if you thank about it the strike is causeing millions of dollors and if it continues millions could be out of work because the writers have everyone by the “balls” right now

  9. Look the writers are doing major damage and so they should be. They should get some money but I do hope that they come to a head soon.

  10. I totally agree with the comment posted above by Richard! Some of you could really use this time to brush up on your spelling!! I support the writers for what they are doing and just like everyone else, I hope this strike ends sooner than later. I really hope they get what they deserve and more. They get so little credit for the time and talent it takes to write for millions and millions of viewers and I am positive that those who are complaining and belly aching about the strike could not write their way out of a paper bag!!!
