Writers Strike News Roundup: Tues., Dec. 11

TV Critics Association Press Tour Canceled
The Television Critics Association officially canceled its winter critics’ event due to the writers strike, Daily Variety reports.
The TCA said 130 TCA members had already signed up for the press tour, even knowing the event was going to be scaled back, the newspaper reports. But the breakdown of contract talks between writers and producers last week effectively sealed the deal.
The Los Angeles economy is going to be slightly affected by the cancellation, as the press tour generates good income from the arrival of hundreds of publicists and reporters, the newspaper says.
Poll: Outsiders Familiar With Strike
A survey of 3,100 viewers between the ages of 13 and 64 by the research firm OTX revealed that 73% of respondents knew the Writers Guild of America was on strike, Daily Variety reports.
Of that 73%, 41% of the respondents supported the writers, the newspaper says.
Also, 41% of the total respondents said they would rent or buy more DVDs in response to the strike, the publication reports.
Barbs Fly After Strike Talk Breakdown
Any diplomacy left between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers is out the window as the two sides trade jabs at each other, Daily Variety says.
The WGA referred to the AMPTP as liars, while the AMPTP repeatedly referred to WGA leaders as organizers in statements released recently, the newspaper says.
Industry insiders are shocked that the guild and the AMPTP are so divided as to disagree even over trivial matters, such as the timing of the AMPTP’s counter-offer on Friday, the newspaper reports.
