CBS News is getting animated with the addition of Josh Landis and Mitch Butler and “The Fast Draw,” the animated news series they created.
The duo’s work, which combines live-action and cartoons to expand on the big stories of the day, will appear on a variety of CBS News broadcasts and on CBSNews.com, according to Monday’s announcement by Paul Friedman, CBS News senior VP for news coverage.
Mr. Friedman is a former executive at ABC News, where Landis and Butler’s work appeared as “The Quick Draw.”
Mr. Landis was a writer for a number of ABC newscasts, including “World News Tonight With Peter Jennings” and “Good Morning America.” Mr. Landis also will be a correspondent for CBS NewsPath, the network’s news service to affiliates and other clients.
Mr. Butler’s cartoons have appeared on Discovery Channel and PBS in addition to ABC News and “Nova.” He directed episodes of “G.I. Joe” for Hasbro and created graphics for commercial projects for a number of large companies.
“We’re always looking for new ways to help our viewers understand the increasingly complex—and sometimes confounding—world around us,” Mr. Friedman said in the announcement. “Josh and Mitch do that in a unique and informative way that will complement the strong reporting of our anchors and correspondents.”
“Josh brings credibility, I bring chaos,” Mr. Butler said. “He looks for relevant, I look for unique. Together, it works.”
“After working on traditional broadcasts for years, it’s extremely liberating to let the audience in on complex ideas by illustrating them in the simplest of terms,” Mr. Landis said.
